ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Union College's Abby Sears has been named the Appalachian Athletic Conference's Softball Player of the Week for the period ending Apr. 23, the league announced today. 

Sears, a senior, helped the Lady Bulldogs split a doubleheader at Cumberlands (Ky.) last Friday in the team's only games of the week. The split pushed UC's final regular season record on the year to 26-15.

In the first game, Sears two-run homer in sixth inning that tied ballgame up at two, in a contest that the Lady Bulldogs eventually dropped, 3-2. She followed that up with a 2-for-3 performance in game two, adding a two-RBI double in UC's 7-5 win 

Sears also recorded a victory in the pitching circle in the second game after tossing four inning, pushing her record on the year to 14-5. Overall, she ended the regular season batting a team best .409, and knocked in 27 RBI, as well.

Sears and the rest of the Lady Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they open the 2012 AAC Tournament as the fifth-seed in Kingsport, Tenn. The Lady Bulldogs will open the tournament up against fourth-seeded Virginia Intermont.
