The Union College softball team took a pair of 4-3 victories from UVA-Wise in an NAIA doubleheader on Wednesday.
With the victories, Union moved to 19-6 on the year, while UVA-Wise fell to 15-17 with the losses.
In game one, a back and forth, extra inning affair was won by the Lady Bulldogs with some bold baserunning in the extra frame.
In the second, the Lady Bulldogs extended the lead out to 3-0 after an RBI double by Brett that scored Madison McKinney
. UVA-Wise, however, came back, scoring two runs in the third, then a run in the fifth to tie the game up at 3-all.
The score remained that way over the next two innings, so the Lady Bulldogs went into extra innings for the second time in their last three games. In the top of the eighth, Morgan Brown
was placed on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule being in effect.
After getting sacrificed over to third, Union rolled the dice, and ran a squeeze play. The gamble paid off, as Brown scored, giving the Lady Bulldogs a one-run lead. In the bottom half, UVA-Wise went down in order, as UC took game one in thrilling fashion.
Overall in the first game, Brett was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, while Wojnowski was also 2-for-4 with a run scored.
In the circle, Sears started the game, but was pulled after five in favor of reliever Alissa Hampton
(1-0), who tossed two innings of shutout ball to earn the victory. Sears then came back in in the eighth, and retired the side to earn the save, her first of the season.
In the second game, the Lady Bulldogs dug out of an early hole to take a one-run victory, completing the DH sweep.
After the first two innings were scoreless, UVA-Wise struck for three runs in the bottom of the third off of starter Rachel Cogdill
to take a 3-0 lead after three.
UC, however, came back in the top of the fourth with two runs to cut the lead down to one. The big hit in the inning was notched by Jamie Cyrus
, who had a two-RBI double, making it a 3-2 game.
In the sixth, Sears capped off a banner afternoon by hitting the eventual game-winner, a two-run homer to lift the Lady Bulldogs to a one run lead. The home run was the third of the year for the senior.
Sears then proceeded to finish the game off in the pitching circle, coming in with one out in the sixth to get the last five outs to notch her second save of the day, and give the Lady Bulldogs the DH sweep.
Overall in the second game, Sears was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a double, and a two-run home run. Brooklyn Hesterberg
was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Cyrus was 1-for-3 with two RBI, and a run scored. In the circle, Hampton came in relief again to record the victory (2-0), with Sears picking up the save.
