BRISTOL, Tenn. The Union College volleyball team used a 3-1 first-round victory over Mountain State (W.Va.) University on Friday to advance in the NAIA Region XII Tournament, contested at King College in Bristol, Tenn.

The third-seeded Lady Bulldogs improved to 34-14 with the win and will play Bryan (Tenn.) College, the No. 2 seed, in a Region XII semifinal contest Saturday set to start at noon.

Mountain State, the No. 6 seed from the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was eliminated from the tournament and ends the season at 30-15.

The Lady Bulldogs took the first game, 30-18, before Mountain State evened the match with a 30-25 win in the second game. Union reeled off two straight games to clinch the match, 30-24 and 30-19.

Union was led by Stephanie Pateman (Weyburn, Canada), an All-Region XII selection, and her 16 kills. Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) and Autumn Combs (Florence, Ky.) were responsible for 11 and ten kills, respectively.

Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.) was credited for 40 assists while Tracie Phillips (Bowling Green, Ky.) recorded 23 digs.

UVa-Wise, the No. 5 seed, picked up a 3-0 win over fourth-seeded Indiana University Southeast in the other first-round match to set up the other semifinal contest between UVa-Wise and King at 10 a.m.

After the semifinal contests, the winners will face each other in the NAIA Region XII Championship at 3 p.m. The winner of the NAIA Region XII Tournament earns a trip to the NAIA Volleyball National Championship.
