MONTREAT, N.C. - Visiting Montreat (N.C.) took the lead following the opening tip and never looked back as it defeated host No. 24 Union 81-65 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Thursday.

The loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 17-7 overall and 8-5 in the conference, while the Lady Cavaliers improve to 16-6 overall and 9-4 in the AAC.

After a Lindsey Waters (Stearns, Ky.) three-point play, Union trailed 6-5 with 16:07 remaining in the half. Montreat then went on 19-6 run to open up a 25-11 cushion with 8:30 to play. Late in the period, Union used a 9-0 surge to cut the margin to 33-27. However, Montreat scored the final three points of the half to take a 36-27 lead into the break.

In the second half, Union could never maintain momentum, only counting the margin down to nine but no further. Montreat led by as much as 17 en route to the 81-65 decision.

Waters paced Union with 18 points and 12 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season. Laura Perkins (Myra, Ky.) and Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) helped out with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Three Lady Cavaliers combined to score 63 points with Ebony Battle leading the way with 27 points. Mykiea Russell added 18 points to go with seven assists, and Kaitlyn Clontz knocked in 17 points.

Union returns to action Saturday when it visits Virginia Intermont in another conference contest. Game time set for 5:30 p.m.
