WALESKA, Ga. -- Union College's Carlos Sanford came off to bench to score a game-high 18 points, but it wasn't enough, as Reinhardt (Ga.) came back from a halftime deficit to down the Bulldogs, 63-60, in Appalachian Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, UC fell to 5-20 overall, 2-9 in the AAC, while Reinhardt improved to 13-9 with the victory, 8-3 in the AAC.

In the first half, both teams were slow coming out of the gate, as the first points of the game were not scored until the 16-minute mark on a Reinhardt three-pointer. The defensive tone continued throughout the first 10 minutes of play, as Reinhardt held just a 12-9 lead with 10:01 left in the period.

Reinhardt continued to hold a slim lead over the next couple of minutes, and led 19-13 with 8:03 left in the period. Here, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to take their first lead (20-19) of the night with 4:51 left. From here on out, Union controlled things, and took their biggest lead of the night at 29-21 with a minute left after Ian Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J.) knocked down a pair of free throws.

Reinhardt didn't go into the half quietly, however, and after the first 20 minutes of action, Union held a 31-26 lead after Davis made the last basket of the period with 26 seconds left.

In the second half, Reinhardt slowly came back over the first six minutes to tie the game up at 36-all with 14 minutes left. Here, the Eagles went on a 9-2 run over the next few minutes to take a 45-38 lead with 11 minutes left in regulation.

Reinhardt continued to hold off the Bulldogs until the six minute mark, when Sanford (Durham, N.C.) drained a three to give UC their first lead since early in the period at 50-49. Reinhardt, however, went on a demoralizing 7-0 run over the next two minutes that gave them a 56-50 lead with 4:22 left.

The deficit proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to come back from, as the Eagles salted the game away at the free throw line in the final minute. Sanford made the games final basket at the buzzer (a three pointer), but it was too late, as Reinhardt hung on for the three-point home win.

Overall, Sanford led the way, scoring 18 points in part due to a 4-of-6 shooting performance from beyond the arc. Other double-digit scorers on the night included Josh Hurd (Independence, Ky.), who finished with 14 points and snatched 11 rebounds to record his third double-double in as many games. Ryan Young (Waynesburg, Ky.) was the last Bulldog to score in double-figures, as he added 12 points.

Reinhardt was led in the win by David Lawson and Ishmael John, who each scored 16 points, apiece.

Union returns home to Robsion Arena for their next game on Thursday against AAC-foe Montreat (N.C.). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
