ATHENS, Tenn. -- Union College's Josh Hurd scored a team-high 24 points, but it wasn't enough, as host Tennessee Wesleyan held off the Bulldogs, 100-96, in Appalachian Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, UC fell  to 5-19 overall, 2-8 in the AAC, while Tennessee Wesleyan improved to 14-9 with the victory, 8-2 in the AAC.

In the first half, Union came out firing in the first four and a half minutes, racing out to a 15-7 lead with 15:27 left after an Ian Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J.) jumper. Tennessee Wesleyan, however, quickly extinguished the run, going on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to take their first lead of the night at 16-15 with 13 minutes left.

Over the next couple of minutes, the lead swung back and forth, and with 9:56 left, things were knotted up at 22-all after another Davis jumper.

Here, TWC went on a big 13-2 run to blow the game open at 35-24 with six minutes left in the half. The closest UC came to the lead the rest of the half was six points (43-37), as Tennessee Wesleyan went into the half ahead by nine at 52-43.

In the second half, TWC continued to hold the large lead, eventually taking their largest of the night with eight minutes left at 82-67.

The deficit that Union had faced in the first half proved to be too much to come back from, as a late comeback bid in the final minutes, which saw UC get within four points twice, proved to be too little, too late. Tennessee Wesleyan held off the late charge by Union, and recorded their eighth win in conference on the season in the process

Overall, Hurd (Independence, Ky.) poured in 24 points to lead UC in a losing effort. He also snatched 10 rebounds to record his second double-double in as many games. Five other Bulldogs also scored in double-digits in the loss, with Carlos Sanford (Durham, N.C.) coming off the bench to score 16 points, while James Strange (Pineville, Ky.) chipped in with 14 points.

Other double-digit scorers for UC includeed Davis, who had 13 points, Ryan Young (Waynesburg, Ky.), who ended with 11 points, and Daniel Fernandez-Munkholm (Arroyo de la Miel, Spain)  who had 10 points.

Tennessee Wesleyan was led in the win by Desmond Crisp, who had a game-high 26 points.

Union stays on the road for their next game, traveling to Reinhardt on Tuesday. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
