BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Caity Merritt earned a spot on the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District 4 Volleyball Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), marking the first time a Union volleyball student-athlete received the honor.

Merritt (Abingdon, Va.) is one of nine student-athletes to make the College Division All-District 4 Team. The College Division is made of NAIA, junior colleges and Canadian colleges and universities, while District 4 consists of schools from Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Tennessee.

To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum 3.30 grade-point average and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games.

A psychology major, Merritt helped Union to a 19-16 overall record and a 14-2 Appalachian Conference mark to win the regular-season championship. She played in 32 matches and 112 sets, recording 112 kills, a .196 hitting percentage and 53 total blocks.

Merritt posted a season-high 13 kills in a 3-2 win over Virginia Intermont on Oct. 29 and had six total blocks in a 3-2 win over Columbia (S.C.) on Nov. 10 in the AAC Tournament.

By virtue of making the All-District 4 First Team, Merritt is now eligible for the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Volleyball Team.
