BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – A pair of Union College football players, senior middle linebacker Patrick O’Neal and sophomore running back and tight end Jeff Howard, earned Academic All-Mid South Conference honors, the conference announced Tuesday.

O’Neal (Lula, Ga.) adds the Academic All-MSC honor to the CoSIDA Academic All-American District IV team honor he received earlier in the month. He was a 2006 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete team member as well. O’Neal played in all 11 games this season and recorded a Union single-season record with 143 tackles. During the season he also tied the Union single-game record with 20 tackles against MSC East foes, University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) and Georgetown (Ky.) College. He was honored with the MSC and NAIA Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Georgetown. O’Neal added two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, three sacks and ten tackles for loss in his senior season.

Howard (Pathfork, Ky.) caught one pass for 21 yards this season. He also saw action on special teams and made one tackle.

Union’s season came to an end at 4-7 after the Bulldogs handed then No. 17 Georgetown a 28-21 loss this past weekend. It marked the first time Union defeated Georgetown since 1938, covering a span of 23 games.
