BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – After a fourth-place finish at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament, the Union College volleyball team enters this weekend’s NAIA Region XII Volleyball Tournament as the No. 3 seed, the association announced Monday. The tournament will begin Friday at King College in Bristol, Tenn.

Union will play Mountain State (W.Va.) University, the No. 6 seed and Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament champion, at 6 p.m. in a first-round contest. The winner advances to Saturday’s semifinal match against Bryan (Tenn.) College, the second seed.

The other first-round match features Indiana University Southeast, the No. 4 seed and KIAC regular-season champs, against UVa-Wise, the fifth-seed out of the AAC at 4 p.m. King, the AAC tournament champs will play the winner Saturday.

The semifinals are scheduled for 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday, with the championship match at 3 p.m. The winner of the tournament earns an automatic bid for the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs own a 33-14 record before the tournament. Union, the AAC regular-season champs, defeated Mountain State 3-2 on October 4. Mountain State finished tied for second in the KIAC regular season with a 5-2 conference mark. The Lady Cougars hold a 30-14 overall record before the Region XII Tournament.

This is the third region bid for Union since 2000. The last time Union played in a Region XII Tournament was in 2003. In that tournament, the Lady Bulldogs were defeated by King in the semifinals after an opening round victory over Asbury (Ky.) College.
