BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- A goal by Reinhardt's Jansen Berry in the 64th minute proved to be the difference, as the Eagles defeated Union College, 2-1, in Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Burch/Nau Field. The match was the AAC season opener for both squads.

With the win, Reinhardt moved to 5-0 on the year, 1-0 in the AAC, while Union dropped to 3-4-1 overall, 0-1 in the AAC with the defeat.

In the first half, Reinhardt was first to crack the scoreboard, as Sam Barnsley scored his third goal of the season from 10 yards out in the 18th minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The lead, however, was short lived, as Chris Elliott (Isle of Wight, England) scored his first goal of the season in the 28th minute to knot the game up at one. The score was the last for both teams the rest of the period, as the match remained tied at one going into the half.

In the second half, Reinhardt scored the eventual game-winner with over 25 minutes left in the match. Berry headed the ball into the net off a corner kick from teammate Tom Wilson, as the goal was the fifth of the season for Berry.

For the remainder of regulation, Union had several chances to tie the game up at two, but could not convert on their attempts on net. Reinhardt goalie Zack Schultze was solid in between the pipes earning the win after stopping seven shots on the afternoon (included was a save on a Union penalty kick in the first half).

Overall, Reinhardt outshot Union 14-13 on the day, and had an 8-5 advantage on corners. Union goalie Andrew Metcalf (Chester, England) had a strong day in net despite losing the match, making seven total saves.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday when they host Georgetown at Burch/Nau Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
