BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Junior forward Dominic Scheele (Clarksville, Tenn.) scored twice in the first half, as the Union College men's soccer team held off visiting Cumberland University in the final 45 minutes to secure a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon at Burch/Nau Field. The match was the finale of the 2011 Golden Corral Bulldog Classic.

With the victory, Union notched their first win of the 2011 campaign, and evened their record to 1-1. Cumberland fell to 1-1 with the defeat.

In the first period, Union was the aggressor right from kick-off, but it was the visiting Bulldogs who capitalized on their only legitimate scoring chance of the period. In the 15th minute, Harry Mason scored unassisted from five yards out to give Cumberland the early 1-0 advantage.

Almost six minutes later, Union scored their first goal of the 2011 season to tie the game up at one apiece. Scheele added his first goal of the day here, as he took a pass from Chris Elliott (Isle of Wright, England) and fired a shot passed Cumberland goal keeper Matthew Shattuck from four yards out to tie up the ballgame.

Union continued to pressure Cumberland the rest of the first half, outshooting the visiting Bulldogs 8-2. But, as the half was about to come to a close, the game was still tied at one.

The home Bulldogs, however, cashed in on an opportunity as late as one can. With four seconds left in the half,  Scheele scored his second goal from another Elliott pass. The frantic score gave Union a one-goal advantage entering the locker room for halftime.

In the second half, it was a different story, as Cumberland seemingly kept possession of the ball on their end of the field for the majority, outshooting Union 6-2 in the period. The UC defense, however, was very strong, stopping each threat Cumberland made on net. The visiting Bulldogs let one too many chances slip away in the period, and ran out of time to give UC their first win of the season.

Overall, Union outshot Cumberland 10-8, while Cumberland had a decisive 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Andrew Metcalf (Chester, England) picked up the first win of his collegiate career in net for UC in the win as well after 90 solid minutes of play in between the pipes.

Union returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 3 when they host Indiana Tech at Burch/Nau Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
