BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – After clinching the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season last week, the Union College volleyball team received seven votes in this week’s NAIA national rankings to move to No. 29, the association announced Wednesday. The ranking is the highest this season for the Lady Bulldogs.

This marks the second week in a row Union has been recognized nationally. The Lady Bulldogs were landed at No. 36 last week with their three votes. Union also earned a spot in the rankings on September 12, at No. 35.

The Lady Bulldogs, the top team in Region XII for ten weeks in a row, are the only team from Region XII and the AAC to receive votes in the national poll.

Union complied a 2-2 record last week, with the two wins inAAC play to give the Lady Bulldogs their first conference title in program history. The first win came at Virginia Intermont College Thursday followed by the conference-clinching victory over Covenant (Ga.) College on Saturday. The two setbacks were at Bryan (Tenn.) College and against Campbellsville (Ky.) University, ranked No. 21 at the time. The Lady Bulldogs finished the week with an overall record of 31-11 and completed conference play at 16-2.

This week, the Lady Bulldogs have already played a pair of matches versus Asbury (Ky.) College and Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College, both on Tuesday at Asbury. Union started the evening with a 3-1 loss against Lindsey Wilson, but the Lady Bulldogs ended the regular season with their 19th sweeping victory over Asbury.

Next for Union is the AAC Tournament, which begins Friday morning and is being contested at King College in Bristol, Tenn. The first-round opponent for Union, the top seed in the tournament, will be the winner between Virginia Intermont and Bluefield (Va.) College. Virginia Intermont and Bluefield will battle at 9 a.m. and then play Union at 11 a.m. Play will continue throughout Friday, with the championship match scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday.
