KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- Union senior Falon Catalano was named the 2011 Appalachian Athletic Conference's Softball Player of the Year on Tuesday. Catalano, a senior, is the first player in Union program history to win the Player of the Year award.

 On the season, Catalano has led the Lady Bulldogs in the pitching circle and at the plate. As the Lady Bulldog ace, she has posted a 9-5 overall mark with a 1.52 ERA.

She has also posted the lowest opponent batting average against in the league at .186 and leads the conference in batters struck out per game at 10.97 (she has totaled 126 strikeouts on the year). Catalano also came out of the bullpen and registered four saves on the year, as well.

At the dish, Catalano has been just as impressive, posting a .324 batting average, with 13 doubles, two homers and 33 RBI. Catalano's double and home run totals are tied for the UC team lead on the year.

Along with winning Player of the Year honors, Catalano was an All-Conference selection at pitcher and earned a spot on the  Academic All-Conference team . Catalano was joined on that squad with teammate Whitley Cochran, a junior.

Union returns to action tomorrow when they take on Montreat in the second round of the 2011 AAC Softball Tournament in Kingsport, Tenn. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
