BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Union men's basketball coach Sean Gillespie has announced that Stephen Hurst has signed a letter of intent to join the Bulldog program this fall. Hurst, a 6-2 guard, joins the Union Program from Shorter Community College in Little Rock, Ark.

"We are excited to see Stephen join the Bulldog program," said Gillespie.  "We believe that we are getting a great student-athlete and basketball player.  He has a great feel for the game and offensive skills to go with it. We look forward to his contribution this upcoming season."

At Shorter, Hurst was a team captain and averaged 18 points per game this past season, along with  five assists and six rebounds per contest. He also shot an impressive 83 percent from the free throw line on the year. Hurst was named to the Missouri State Holiday All-Tournament Team, and at the completion of his freshman year was rated in the top 5 of Junior College prospects coming out of Arkansas.

Hurst prepped at Dyer County High School in Newbern, Tenn., where he led the Choctaws to two straight state tournament Final Four appearances. In his time on the team, Dyer County won 68 games in a two-year period.

The Bulldogs, who ended this past season with a 16-16 overall record, captured the 2010-11 AAC Tournament Championship and represented the league at the 2011 NAIA National Tournament.
