The Union track & field teams opened the outdoor portion of their 2011 schedule this weekend, taking part at the Emory Track & Field Classic in Atlanta. Overall, the men's team placed 9th overall in the team event.
The Bulldogs were led in the classic by freshman sprinter Jaquan Holland
, who captured two events.
First, Holland took the 100m dash, crossing the finish line in 10.92. The mark barely missed a school record that was set by James Fowler
at the same meet last season. The second event won by Holland was the 200m dash, finishing in 22.03, which
just missed being a NAIA National Qualifying "B" cut. Meantime, Steven Carron
placed third overall in the 200m, crossing the finish line in 22.76. He then finished second in the 400m dash, finishing in 50.11.
In men's field events, John Luther
placed third overall in the shot put, registering a throw of 44 feet, .75 inches, which was a new Union College record. Luther then continued his day with a second place finish in the discus, finishing with a mark of 128 feet, eight inches, which was also a new school record. Meanwhile, the lone woman to compete in the meet was Maddie Peterson, who placed 11th in both the shot put (28 feet, 4.25 inches) and the discus (78 feet, eight inches).
The Union track & field team returns to action at the Centre College Invitational on April 2nd.
