COLUMBIA, Ky. --
The Union College softball team dropped a pair of games at the Lindsey Wilson Classic on Saturday, losing 4-0 to host LWC, then to Martin Methodist, 9-4 in the nightcap.
With the losses, Union fell to 11-13 overall on the year.
In the first game of the day against the host Blue Radiers, Union was stymied all afternoon by Lindsey Wilson pitchers Morgan Paschall and Anyibell Ramirez, who shutout the Lady Bulldogs. Union was only able to record one hit in the entire contest off the two, as Whitley Cochran
was the lone Lady Bulldog to have a hit in the game (in the sixth inning).
Lindsey Wilson scored all of their runs in the third inning, scoring all four off of Union starter Abby Sears
(three of which were earned). Sears was the loser for UC in the game (2-4), while Ramirez picked up the win for Lindsey Wilson in four innings of work, striking out eight.
In the nightcap against Martin Methodist, Union got off to a good start, taking an early 1-0 lead when Cochran scored on a MMC fielding error.
After the Redhawks added their first run in the bottom of the second to tie the game up at one, UC responded in the top half of the third, when Ashley Tatman
slapped an two-RBI single right field, scoring Cochran and Hillary Leftrick
to make it 3-1 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs. Union added another run in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead when Falon Catalano
hit had an RBI double, scoring Leftrick.
In the bottom half of the fifth, however, things went awry for Union and starter Catalano, as Martin Methodist scored eight runs on six hits, all with two outs, to put the game out of Lady Bulldogs' reach.
In the inning, the Redhawks hit two homers off of Catalano. The first, hit by Karina de los Santos, was a two-run shot to cut the deficit down to 4-3. Then, after back-to-back RBI singles gave MMC the lead at 5-4, Joanna Jones hit a back-breaking grand slam to put the Redhawks in the lead for good at 9-4. Union failed to score over the final two innings, as the Redhawks took the win.
Overall, Leftrick went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, while Cochran was 2-for-4 and also scored two runs. Tatman, meanwhile, was 1-for-4 with three RBI. In the circle, Catalano (5-3) took the loss, going four and two-thirds giving up nine runs (two earned), eight hits, while striking out four. Ashley Webb was the winner for Martin Methodist.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they host Berea in a doubleheader at Union Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
