ST. CATHERINE, Ky. -- Union College senior Falon Catalano tossed the third no hitter in softball program history in a 2-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader against St. Catherine on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs lost the second game of the day, 6-5, to the host Lady Patriots.

With the results, Union moved to 11-9 on the year, while St. Catherine is now 5-5.

In game one, Catalano (5-1) was dominant, notching the complete game no-hit performance in the circle. In her seven innings of work, Catalano struck out 12 and walked none, as the lone St. Catherine's player to reach base on the day reached on an error in the fourth inning.

The no-hitter was the third in program history and the first since 2007 when Sarah Driver had one against Alice Lloyd. Rhi Martin recorded the first no-no for the Lady Bulldogs back in 2001 against Bellarmine.

At the dish in the first game, Union scored lone runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. In the second, Alissa Hampton hit her first home run of the year to give UC the 1-0 lead, while in the third, Abby Sears had a sacrifice RBI fly out, scoring Catalano. Overall, Catalano played just as well at the plate in the game, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Autumn Greenwell and Morgan Brown also had hits in the victory for Union.

In game two, St. Catherine used a late rally to knock off the Lady Bulldogs, stopping their eight-game winning streak.

Union jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first after Catalano had a two-RBI double, with Sears recording the other RBI. The Lady Patriots, however, roared back in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game up a 3.

Union, however, took the lead back in the top half of the 7th when Ashley Tatman roped a two RBI single with two outs to give the Lady Bulldogs the 5-3 lead going into the last half of the seventh.

In the bottom half of the inning, St. Catherine loaded the bases with two outs, then tied the game after a fielding error by Union, scoring two runs on the play. With runners on second and third, the next batter for the Lady Patriots hit an RBI single, scoring the runner from third and ending the game.

Overall, Whitley Cochran went 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and a stolen base, while Catalano went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. In the circle, Sears (2-3) was the hard luck loser after giving up three runs, all of which were unearned.

Union returns to action on Friday when they play Davenport and Madonna at the Campbellsville University Tournament. First pitch for the Davenport game is scheduled for 1 p.m. while the Madonna contest is set to start at 3 p.m.
