BEREA, Ky. -- The Union College softball team split a doubleheader at Berea on Wednesday, winning game one 2-0, while dropping game two 4-2.

With the results, Union went to 2-7 on the year, while Berea is 1-1 on the short season.

In the game one victory, Union was paced by a superb pitching performance by freshman Katie Perkins, who earned her first career victory in the circle after hurling a complete game shutout. Perkins gave up just four hits, did not allow a walk and struck out five Berea batters to earn the win in the circle.

At the dish in game one, Ashley Tatman made the play of the game,  smacking an eventual game-winning 2 RBI double in the fourth inning that scored Abby Sears and Whitley Cochran. Overall in the game, Sears went 3-for-3 with two double and a walk, while Tatman went 2-for-3 with a double and the two RBI to pace the Lady Bulldogs.

In game two, miscues and missed opportunities hampered the Lady Bulldogs in the 4-2 loss. At the plate, Union left eight runners on base and had a chance to take a lead in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out, but failed to score. In the field, mistakes hurt Union, as each of the runs Berea scored in the game were unearned.

In the loss, Hillary Leftrick went 3-for-4 with two doubles at the plate. In the circle, Sears was the hard luck loser, going six innings, with four runs scored (all unearned) on just five hits.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, March 2nd when they Campbelsville in a doubleheader at Union Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
