BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Montreat's Tyler Buff scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Cavaliers to a 76-71 win over Union in Appalachian Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Robsion Arena.

With the loss the Bulldogs fell to 11-14 overall on the year, 5-6 in the AAC, while Montreat improved to 8-17 overall and 3-8 in the AAC with the win.

In the first half, Union raced out of the locker room, taking an early 12-2 lead in the game's first five minutes. Montreat, however, battled back in just three minute, racing off an 11-0 run to take 13-12 lead.

After both teams shared the lead over the next six minutes, Union opened a five point lead (28-23) , but only saw the Cavaliers tie the game up at 30-all with 2:11 left in the half. Montreat continued to ride the momentum into the locker room, as they took a 38-35 lead at the intermission.

To start the second half, the lead swung back and forth in the first 10 minutes of action, as the biggest lead taken by either team during this stretch was four points. At the six minute mark, Montreat took a 65-59 lead, a lead that turned out to be an insurmountable one.

Union got the lead down to one point (70-69) with 2:31 left after James Strange made two free throws, but after Montreat made a free throw with 1:55 left, Buff knocked down a huge three with 1:01 left that gave the Cavaliers a 74-69 lead. Montreat then salted the game away at the line to earn the road AAC win.

Overall, Union was led on the night by Brent Cork, who scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and also pulled down seven rebounds Strange came off the bench and added 13 points, while Ryan Young scored 12 points to round out the Bulldog double-digit scorers.

Montreat had four players score in double digits, led by Buff's effort with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. The Cavaliers were aided all night by hot shooting from the floor, ending the game shooting 55.8% (29-of-52).

Union returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Milligan in an AAC match up. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
