BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Brad Piper is the new head coach for the Union bowling programs, Director of Athletics Darin S. Wilson announced Monday. Piper is the second person to man the post since the programs were reinstated in 2008.

"We are pleased to welcome Brad to the Union College coaching staff," said Wilson. "He comes with a strong background in the sport of bowling and brings a lot of youth and enthusiasm, and we look forward to seeing that to extend to the program and the student-athletes."

Piper replaces Matt Mahony, who coached the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Mahony will remain at Union and continue running the Bulldog Sports Network as well as a few other duties and responsibilities.

"We are very appreciative of all the work Matt did with the Union bowling program," said Wilson. "He did a good job getting the program off the ground, and we know he will be very successful in his new roles within the department."

A 2010 graduate of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) with a degree in communication, Piper bowled for the Blue Raiders and has worked in the bowling industry for seven years.

"I'm looking forward to having a very successful recruiting class for the 2011-2012, and I hope to build upon the success that Coach Mahony has had with the bowling team," said Piper.

In addition, Piper is a Bronze Level USBC (United States Bowling Congress) coach.

Union will not compete during the 2010-11 season but resume play in 2011-12.
