NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Union men's and women's track & field squads opened their 2011 indoor season on Saturday, competing in the Tennessee State Invitational held at the Genrty Center in Nashville.

Union registered some impressive performances on the afternoon, but did record some of their best performances in field events. In the men's pole vault, Andrew Johnston (Benton, Ky.) finished first overall after recording a mark of 13 feet, .25 inches.

Meanwhile in the men's shotput, John Luther (Calhoun, Ga.) notched another victory for the Bulldogs after recording a throw of 49 feet, 6 inches to beat his nearest competitor by almost two feet. In the same event, William White (Manchester, Ky.) was also impressive, finishing in seventh overall with a mark of 36 feet, 3.50 inches. Luther also finished second in the weight throw with a throw of 39 feet, 2.50 inches.

In track events, Jaquan Holland (Long Island, N.Y.) placed 11th overall in the men's 200m dash after crossing the finish line in 22.76, while Steve Carron (Chicago, Ill.) finished 16th in the men's 800m run with a mark of 2:04.16. In the men's 5000m run, Issac Kangogo (Eldoret, Kenya) finished sixth with a time of 16:16.24, while Eric Kinman (Erlanger, Ky.) also registered a top ten finish in the same event in 16:51.97. In the final event of note for the men, the Union distance medley relay team finished in fourth overall in the event with a time of 10:48.44.

On the women's end, Lavin Hadley (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) had the most impressive showing of the day, finishing the 400m dash in 1:04.48 to place 28th overall.

The Union track & field teams return to action on Saturday when they take part in the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind.
