BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Union swimming coach Rafael Forti has announced the signing of junior transfer Renata Cabral. A native of Rio de Janerio, Brazil, Cabral will join the Lady Bulldog swim squad at the start of the spring semester.

"I am very excited that Renata has chosen to continue her academic studies at Union College," said Forti.. "She brings in many years of experience in competitive swimming at the highest level in Brazil and South America."

Cabral transfers into Union College from IBMEC in her native Rio de Janerio. She will swim in freestyle and butterfly events for the Lady Bulldogs.

In her competitive career in Brazil, she won a gold medal in the 50-free at the 2007 Mercosul Cup and earned a silver medal in the same event at the 2010 Mercosul Cup. She also earned bronze medals in the 100-free at the Brazillian National Championship  and the 50-fly at the Mercolsul Cup. Cabral was also a member of a club team that was a four-time state champion in Rio de Janerio.

"Renata comes here after spending several years with her club team, Flamengo, which is a swimming powerhouse in Brazil," continued Forti. "Being exposed to good coaching for a long time will really make her transition to this new phase of her swimming career very smoothly."

Cabral will major in international business at Union.
