LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Union senior running back Armond Smith
captured the Mid-South Conference West Offensive Player of the Year nod
while three other Bulldogs join him on the All-MSC West First Team, the
Mid-South Conference announced Friday.
Joining Smith (Stone Mountain, Ga.) on the All-MSC West First Team are senior offensive lineman Quintin Borders (Lexington, Ky.), junior quarterback Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) and senior defensive lineman Elisee Pompilus (Malden, Mass.).
Ricky Wadlington of Belhaven (Miss.) was named the MSC West Defensive Player of the Year, while Cumberlands' (Ky.) Terrance Cobb and Weston Hazelhurst were the MSC West Freshmen of the Year. John Bland of Cumberlands received the MSC West Coach of the Year award.
Smith led the Mid-South Conference in rushing this season, averaging
125.1 yards per game en route to being named MSC West Offensive Player
of the Year. He also led all running backs with 16
rushing touchdowns. Smith was MSC Offensive Player of the Week twice during the
season and MSC Special Teams Player of the Week once.
During the season, Smith set numerous program records including most rushing yards in a game (312), most rushing yards in a season (1,376), most rushing touchdowns in a game (five), most rushing touchdowns in a season (16), most points scored in a game (30) and most points scored in a season (102 - 16 rushing touchdowns and one kickoff return touchdown).
Smith is the third player in program history to be named the conference's top offensive player, joining Joey Waters (2007) and Borders (2009).
In making the All-MSC West First Team, Borders becomes only the second player in program history to make the first team four times, joining J.T. Pennington, another NAIA All-American offensive lineman. Despite missing a portion of the season due to injury, Borders anchored the offensive line which led the way for Union's record-setting offense. The Bulldogs set offensive records for most points in a season (440), most total offensive yards in a season (5,206), most rushing yards in a season (2,904) and most rushing touchdowns in a season (33).
Brinkley is only the third Bulldog quarterback to make the all-conference first team, joining Waters (2007) and Greg Duncum (1988). The Bulldog signal-caller threw for 2,186 yards and 22 touchdowns on 142-of-255 passing. During the year, Brinkley became the all-time leader in touchdown passes as he currently has 78. He also became the second player in program history to pass for over 7,000 yards in a career. Brinkley is the Bulldog quarterback to throw for over 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns three times in a career. He set the program mark for most touchdown passes in a game with six in the 84-55 win over Bethel (Tenn.) on Oct. 9.
Pompilus was disruptive force on the Bulldog defensive line, recording 40 total tackles with 8.5 going for a loss of 46 yards. He also had 5.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hurries. Pompilus registered two sacks in the win over Bethel on Oct. 9, while posting a season-high nine total tackles against Campbellsville (Ky.) on Sept. 4. He had six total tackles in the wins over Shorter (Ga.) and Faulkner as Union closed out the season with back-to-back wins. Pompilus is the first defensive lineman to make the all-conference first team since Patrtick Burke (2008).
Union had seven players receive MSC West Honorable Mentions. The players were Chad Boyington (Stockbridge, Ga.), Bert Brown (Daytona, Fla.), Zach Eagler (Florence, Ky.), Brad Fulton (Maryville, Tenn.), Demetrius Hicks (Frankfort, Ky.), Sean Mackey (Reddick, Fla.) and Terry Young (Orange Park, Fla.).
Making the Academic All-MSC West Team were Eagler, Darrin Greene (Cherrylog, Ga.), Tyler Harbin (Pineville, Ky.) and Jonathan Shipley (Tazewell, Tenn.). To make the academic all-conference team, a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher with a 3.25 or above grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
Union finished the season 7-4 overall and tied for second in the MSC West with a 4-2 conference record. The Bulldogs win five of their final six games to close out the 2010 campaign.
