KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Fresh off
being named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year,
Karina Ramos showed why she deserved the honor with a dominating
performance in leading second-seeded Union to a 3-0 sweep of No. 7
Bluefield (Va.) and a 3-1 win over No. 3 Bryan (Tenn.) Thursday to win Pool B in the AAC Tournament at the
MeadowView Resort and Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
By virtue of winning the pool, Union will face top-seeded Montreat (N.C.) in the semifinal round Friday at 12 p.m. Montreat is the Pool A runner-up.
In the other semifinal, No. 4 Milligan (Tenn.) plays No. 3 Bryan at 10 a.m. The championship match is set for 2:30 p.m.
Milligan won Pool A with a 3-1 win over Montreat.
Union handed Bluefield a 25-12, 25-10, 25-20 defeat to win its seventh match in a row and to improve to 22-12 overall. Ramos (Presidente, Brazil) delivered 13 kills in 18 total attacks with no errors for a .722 hitting percentage. In addition, she served up four aces to give her eight in two matches at the tournament.
Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.) and Hollie Hopkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) chipped in nine and eight kills, respectively, while Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) helped out with 28 assists. Amanda Silva (Londrina, Brazil) recorded 16 digs with Brooke Porter (Louisville, Ky.) recording 14.
In the final match of pool play, Union battled to a 25-17, 29-31, 25-21, 26-24 victory over Bryan. Ramos continued to show her domination with 10 kills and three aces to go with two solo blocks and six block assists. For the tournament, she leads everyone with 32 kills and 11 aces.
Cat Neumann (Louisville, Ky.) came up huge with 13 kills. Silva posted a match-high 37 digs with Porter adding 27 digs. Moreland recorded 28 assists, while Kalia Yasak (Kula, Hawaii) had 16 helpers.
