WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Freshman Michael Viscardi made a big splash in his Union College debut as he posted a NAIA National Championship Meet qualifying mark and a school record Saturday, but it wasn't enough as Union fell 128-45 to host University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).

"We had a good start to the season," said Union coach Rafael Forti. "We have been training very hard in the pool and weight room, and the times are already very close to last season's best."

Viscardi (Marietta, Ga.) won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1 minute and 4.13 seconds, setting a new school record and qualifying him for nationals. He bested the qualifying mark by 1.36 seconds.

In the 200 freestyle, Viscardi notched a conditional qualifying mark with a time of 1:56.51, just 5.42 seconds shy of securing a spot at nationals in this event.

Union won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.50. Jeremiah Back (Flatgap, Ky.), Karl Smith (Lexington, Ky.), Colin McEachran (Blenheim, Canada) and Viscardi made up the relay team.

The Bulldogs (0-1 overall) return to the pool on Nov. 3 when they will face Transylvania (Ky.) University and Asbury (Ky.) College in Wilmore, Ky. The double-dual meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
