BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union
celebrated 'Senior Night' with a 3-0 sweep of Appalachian Athletic
Conference Bryan (Tenn.), posting a 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 victory Tuesday.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improve to 16-12 overall and 9-3 in the AAC. The Lady Lions drop to 18-11 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
Freshman Karina Ramos (Presidente, Brazil) led the Union attack with 12 kills and a .320 hitting percentage. She also recorded a solo block and assisted on another. Lauren McMillan (Corbin, Ky.) delivered seven kills as she hit .375 for the match, while senior Maddie Peterson (Soda Springs, Idaho), Brittany Harris (Louisville, Ky.) and Cat Neumann (Louisville, Ky.) each chipped in seven kills. Neumann also had three block assists.
In the opening set, neither team could seize control as the score was tied seven times and changed hands three times. Tied at 12-12, Union used a 5-0 surge to open up a 17-12 cushion. However, Bryan battled back, cutting the margin to 23-22. The Lady Bulldogs, though, won two of the final three points to seal the 25-23 decision.
Union came out blazing in the second set, opening things up with a 6-0 rally. Bryan did slice the margin to 7-5, but the score was never tied and Union never trailed en route to the 25-17 second-set outcome.
The third set mirrored the first as the lead went back-and-fourth. Down 17-16, Union reeled off three consecutive points to grab a 19-17 edge. Bryan kept it close but never managed to tie or put itself in position to regain the lead as Union pulled up the 25-23 decision to complete the sweep.
Senior Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) pieced together a solid match with 24 assists and 18 digs, while senior Amanda Silva (Londrina, Brazil) had 27 digs.
Also helping out the Lady Bulldog cause were Kalia Yasak (Kula, Hawaii) and Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.). Yasak posted 18 assists and eight digs, while Cantrell posted four kills and three block assists.
Union returns to action Saturday when it hosts Bluefield (Va.) in conference action at 1 p.m. and Indiana-Southeast at 5 p.m.
