ATHENS, Tenn - Senior Renata Peixoto's goal in the 20th minute of play proved crucial, as the Union College women's soccer team used a strong defensive effort to defeat Tennessee Wesleyan, 1-0 in a crucial Appalachian Athletic Conference match on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Union improved to 9-6-0 overall, 5-1 in the AAC and captured their fourth straight win. Tennessee Wesleyan fell to 8-5-1 overall and dropped their first AAC match of the season in the loss (4-1).
In the first half, Peixoto (Brasilia, Brazil) scored the eventual game winner when she headed in the score off a Jenn Sckirl (Edmonton, Canada) corner with 25 minutes remaining until halftime. For Peixoto, the goal was her ninth of the 2010 season, while Sckril added her third assist of the season on the play. Peixoto's score was also her second game-winning goal of the season.
From there, the Union defense took over and denied each Tennessee Wesleyan goal opportunity the rest of the afternoon. The catalyst for the defense was senior goalie Patricia Nardy (Sao Paulo, Brazil), who earned her third shutout victory of the season after making six saves in net.
Overall, Tennessee Wesleyan out-shot the Lady Bulldogs 13-12 in the match. The contest was also a physical affair, as nine combined cards were given by officials on the afternoon.
Union returns to the pitch on Saturday when they host an out-of-conference affair with Missouri Baptist College. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Bulldog Field.
