CANTON, Ohio - Union put up a valiant effort but to no avail, dropping two heart-breaking losses Saturday at the Malone (Ohio) University Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs suffered a 3-2 defeat to Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) in the day's first game before losing 3-1 to Campbellsville (Ky.).

Union is now 1-3 on the young season and returns to action Tuesday at Cumberlands (Ky.). Match time is set for 7 p.m.

In the opener, Union collected a pair of hard-fought wins during the first two sets against Roberts Wesleyan, winning 30-28 and 25-23. However, the Raiders stormed back to win the third and fourth sets by the counts of 25-17 and 25-19. Roberts Wesleyan then completed the comeback with a 15-8 victory in the fifth and decisive set.

Vitoria Oliveria (Sao Paulo, Brazil) delivered 15 kills and 14 digs, while Karina Ramos (Presidente, Brazil) had 11 kills and 15 digs. Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.) and Caity Merritt (Abingdon, Va.) each chipped in 10 kills with Cantrell added three service aces.

Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) and Amanda Silva (Londrina, Brazil) also had three aces apiece, while Moreland served up 37 assists and Silva registering 28 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs held strong against Campbellsville but lost the first two sets 25-19 and 27-25. Union rallied for a 25-23 win in the third set before the Lady Tigers wrapped the match with a 25-17 decision in the fourth set.
