BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The 2010 season opener for the Union College Lady Bulldogs did not go as planned today as a late goal proved to be the deciding edge as Cumberland University topped Union 2-1 at Birch-Nau Field.

With the loss Union falls to 0-1 on the season.
Union opened the scoring early in the first half, as Renata Peixoto (Brasilia, Brazil) touched in a goal at the 14:55 mark, putting Union up 1-0.
The Lady Bulldogs of Union College took the lead into the half, as much of the rest of the first frame was paced by ball-control as neither squad could scratch the scoreboard in the opening stanza.
Cumberland University regrouped in the half and tied up the contest at the 62:50 mark, when Morgan Shaffer slipped a shot past the Union goal keeper, Patricia Nardy (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to even the score at 1-to-1.
Union looked to regain the lead a few minutes after Cumberland tied the contest, when Ashley Hall (Hazard, Ky.) maneuvered past the defense and put a shot on goal, but a nice save by Hanna Sparks put a halt to the Union scoring threat.
Cumberland University used a free kick late in the second half to catch the Union defense off guard, as Helena Dimantas Farias poked a shot past Nardy in the 86th minute to take a 2-1 lead. In all, Nardy tallied six saves in the opening season contest.
The late goal with less than five minutes left to play proved to be too much for Union to overcome as the contest ended in favor of Cumberland University, 2-to-1.
The Union offense started strong, but tapered off late as the Lady Bulldogs tallied 13 total shots, six of which were on goal. Union senior Ashley Hall led the team in shots on the day with five (three on goal).
Union will be back in action tomorrow afternoon , as it will play host to Emmanuel College to close out the 2010 Lady Bulldog Classic.
Opening kick is slated for 11:00 am.
