KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Timely hitting plus stellar pitching proved to be the right formula for a Lady Bulldog win over UVa-Wise, 5-0, in the second round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament today.

With the win Union moves to 18-16 (8-8 AAC) on the season while UVa-Wise falls to 15-25 (6-10 AAC) on the season.

Union is now slated to face No. 1 seed Reinhardt College tomorrow afternoon, with the winner advancing to the championship round of the winner's bracket and more importantly, not having to play again until Friday afternoon.

Union started off the scoring early when Sarah Driver (Hopkinsville, Ky.) crossed the dish on a sacrifice fly from Abby Sears (London, Ky.), putting the Lady Bulldogs up 1-0 after one inning of play.

A two out double from Bethany Outland (Hopkinsville, Ky.) in the bottom of the fourth ignited a four run excursion for the Lady Bulldogs, making the score 5-0. A two run double off the bat of Jessie Dunning (Bowling Green, Ky.) was followed by a two run single from Driver, accounting for the four run outburst.

Driver (11-7) looked solid all evening, not allowing a single UVa-Wise runner to reach third base in the first six innings.

The Lady Cavaliers loaded the bases in the bottom of top of the seventh inning with just one out. Abby Sears, who came in for Driver after the sixth inning, slammed the door shut on UVa-Wise, retiring the next two batters in order to seal the convincing win.

First pitch for the battle between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Eagles is set for 3:00 p.m.
