BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's basketball program announced today the signing of local 6-foot-9 center Matt St. John (London, Ky.) to its program for the 2010-11 campaign.

St. John garnered national attention, being recognized as the 20th best center in the country on his senior season. He also finished his career as South Laurel High School's all-time leader in scoring (1,866), rebounding (1,036) and blocked shots (345).

Originally from London, Ky. St. John chose the Bulldogs after receiving attention from a plethora of institutions, including Eastern Kentucky University, Western Kentucky University, Lincoln Memorial University and the University of the Cumberlands.

Matt has been a starter on the Cardinals varsity squad since his freshman season. In his final season with the Cardinals, St. John averaged 22.2 points, 13 boards and nine blocks per game, while also leading the state in rebounds and blocks. The heralded center also holds two Kentucky State records for rebounds in a game (33) and blocked shots in a game (18).

No stranger to garnering recognition for his abilities, St. John has earned All-Region and All-Tournament honors in Region-XIII of Kentucky in every year since his freshman season at South Laurel. He also earned All-District Team honors every year in high school for the 50th district of Kentucky.

Head coach Sean Gillespie commented on the signing, "to say I am excited about getting a post presence like Matt would be a severe understatement. For him to commit to us with all the others opportunities that were in front of him is a special feeling. Coach Wright at South Laurel High School has done a great job in getting him to this point in his career and we are looking forward to getting the ‘baton' handed off to us.

Coach Gillespie also went on to say,"the thing that has impressed me about Matt is his foot work and his hands. He has a nice touch with the ball to go with his great moves around the basket and I believe he will have a great career here at Union College as we continue to push the program forward."
