BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - A pair of 10-plus run rallies propelled Union to a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference victories as the Bulldogs won 14-4 and 15-3 over visiting Virginia Intermont Saturday.

Brain Mouton (Oakland, Calif.) and Brandon Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) powered the Bulldog attack, combining to drive in 11 runs. Mouton lined six hits and drove in five RBIs, while Hedrick finished 4-for-5 with six RBIs. Mouton upped his average to .351 on the season with Hedrick bumping his up to a team-leading .422.

Union improves to 28-9 overall and 13-3 in conference play, while Virginia Intermont drops to 10-23 overall and 2-15 in the AAC.

The teams will complete the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Union scored two runs in the bottom of the first for the early advantage but trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth when the Bulldog bats awoke.

In the fifth, Union sent 15 batters to the plate, lined five hits and took advantage of three errors in pushing 10 runs across the plate for a 12-4 lead. A throwing error allowed the first run to score before Mouton singled in a run to tie the game. Hedrick followed with a two-run home run to put the Bulldogs up 6-4. The four-bagger was his eighth on the season.

The rally continued with Union tacking on six more runs. After Hedrick's home run, Mouton had the biggest hit of the inning with a two-run double.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the win in the sixth as Josh Longbrake (St. Cloud, Fla.) and Cory Estep (Harlan, Ky.) each collected a RBI, making the final 14-4.

Mouton finished the game 4-for-4 with four RBIs, while Hedrick went 2-for-3 with three driven in. Donnie Popham (Louisville, Ky.) helped out by going 3-for-4 with a RBI.

Hedrick picked up the win, improving to 7-0 as he tossed his sixth complete game of the season. He gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. The four runs are the most Hedrick has allowed since giving up five in a no-decision against Ohio Dominican.

Mark Schultz had a two-run double to lead Virginia Intermont offensively. Frankie McAteer suffered the loss, lasting 4 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

In the second game, Virginia Intermont jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage but could not maintain the cushion as Union stormed back for the 15-3, five-inning decision.

The Cobras had only two hits in the first inning, but they took advantage of an error and a walk in scoring three runs.

Union answered with a run in bottom of the first before taking the lead for good with a three-run third inning. With bases loaded, Popham drove in a run with an infield hit to short. Steve Scheelk (Kansas City, Mo.) followed with a sac fly to tie the game, and Longbrake singled to drive in a run to make it 4-3 Union.

In the fourth, the Bulldogs exploded for 11 runs on nine hits in sealing the 12-run victory. Hedrick started the scoring with a two-run single. Demetrius Davis (Marietta, Ga.) added a two-run single, and Mouton belted a solo home run for his third round-tripper of the season. The rally was aided by three Cobra errors.

Hedrick finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored with Popham also driving in three runs on a 2-for-3 performance. Davis went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Scheelk collected a pair of RBIs as well.

Adam Snyder (Knoxville, Tenn.) improved to 5-1 on the season as he tossed his fourth complete game. He gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
