BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - No. 16 Union extends its win streak to 11 games with a 16-6 victory over non-conference rival Cumberlands (Ky.) Sunday.

The Bulldogs lined 15 hits and took advantage of nine bases on balls and three hit by pitches in improving their record to 17-6 on the year.

The loss is the eighth in a row for the Patriots, who drop to 10-13 overall.

Union returns to Appalachian Athletic Conference play Monday when it hosts UVa-Wise at 3 p.m.

The Bulldogs wasted little time in taking charge as Brandon Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) belted a three-run home run over the center-field wall in the first inning, giving Union the early advantage.

After Cumberlands scored a run in the top of the third, Union answered with three more in the bottom of the frame to make it a 6-1 contest. Donnie Popham (Louisville, Ky.) and Steve Scheelk (Kansas City, Mo.) each had RBIs during the rally, while Troy Sitton (Cobden, Ill.) scored the final run of the inning thanks to a Patriot error.

Union scored another run in the fourth, both teams pushed a run across in the fifth to make it an 8-2 contest.

In the sixth, Cumberlands exploded for four runs, three of which coming on a bases-clearing double by Jared Stafford. The Bulldogs countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to make it an 11-6 ballgame.

Union sealed the win with five runs in the eighth. The Bulldogs used three singles to load the bases with no outs before four consecutive bases on balls sent four runs homes. Ryan Satterlee (Youngstown, Ohio) ended the game with a run-scoring single up the middle, making the final 16-6.

Offensively, Scheelk led the way going 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBIs. On the season, he is batting .340 but has more RBIs (23) than hits (17).

Hedrick finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Josh Longbrake (St. Cloud, Fla.) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI. Popham went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Satterlee finished the day with one hit and two RBIs.

Lucas Henson (Corbin, Ky.) picked up the win, tossing 1 1/3 innings in relief of starter Jacob Scalf (Barbourville, Ky.). Henson gave up no runs on one hits and no walks with two strikeouts as he improved to 3-0.

Stafford led Cumberlands at the plate in going 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Jake Martin finished 3-for-5 with a run scored.

Trey Anderson suffered the loss, giving up seven runs, six earned, on eight hits, two walks and two hit batters with three strikeouts.
