BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Lady Bulldogs played with their competition but could not pull a win as it dropped a double header to Davenport University Sunday afternoon at Union Field.
With the two losses Union moves to 2-4 (0-0 AAC) on the season while Davenport moves to 15-3. The doubleheader was also the first home contests for the Lady Bulldogs in the 2010 season.
Union drew first blood in the third inning as Ali Blauser smacked an RBI single, scoring sophomore Morgan Brown (Waynesburg, Ky.) to make the score 1-0. The Lady Panthers knotted up the score in the fourth inning, 1-1, and then took control of the contest in the fifth inning when the Lady Panthers platted three runs in the top half of the frame, thanks in part to two Lady Bulldog errors, to take a 4-1 lead. Davenport later tacked on another run in the seventh inning for a final score of 5-1.
Sophomore Ali Blauser knocked in the only run for Union in the first game as the Hopkinsville, Ky. native went 1-for-3 for the contest. Senior Bethany Outland (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and sophomore Abby Sears (London, Ky.) both went 2-for-3 in the opening game.
Game two was a battle of wills as both teams got in and out of jams in the first six innings. The Lady Bulldogs wiggled off the hook in the first inning when the Lady Panthers had runners on the corners and did not score. Davenport then returned the favor when the Lady Bulldogs loaded the bases in the first inning with only one out and did not push across a run.
Davenport scored first in the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead, but Union did not take long to respond as the Lady Bulldogs evened the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning when Ali Blauser singled, scoring fellow sophomore Bethany Rogers (Crofton, Ky.). Rogers finished the game going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Union then looked poised to take control of the game when it had runners on second and third with only one out, but Davenport again avoided the damage as Union could not score.
Davenport then had runners on first and second in the fifth inning with only one out as the Lady Bulldogs defense stiffened and did not allow the Lady Panthers to score in the frame.
The game went into the final inning with the score tied up at 1-1. In the seventh inning Davenport pushed across three runs. Most of the damage came off the bat of Kelsey Egyhazi as she slapped a 2-run double.
The Lady Bulldogs thought they had tied the game when Bethany Outland belted a fastball to deep left center with runners on first and second. The ball barely stayed in the ballpark as it hit off the top of the wall, scoring one and leaving runners on second and third with two outs.
Sophomore Jessie Dunning (Bowling Green, Ky.) stepped up after Outland and poked a single to right field, scoring junior Gina Loflin (Salisbury, N.C.) and moving the pinch-runner Jennifer Burke (Ewing, Va.) to third.
Freshman Autumn Greenwell (Hopkinsville, Ky.) appeared to have slugged a single up the middle to tie the game, but a great defensive play from pitcher Sam Cole ended the game as she threw Greenwell out at first.
Dunning finished the game 1-for-1 with an RBI. Loflin went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Blauser went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Union returns to action Wednesday evening at Georgetown College for a double header. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
