BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Renata Peixoto scored two goals to lead the Union College women’s soccer team in a 6-0 victory over the visitors from Spalding (Ky.) University Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.

The six goals tie the season high for the Lady Bulldogs and is also their fourth shutout this year. With the win, Union improves to 6-5 while Spalding falls to 2-11.

Peixoto’s (Brasilia, Brazil) first goal came in the opening minute as she put a loose ball after a corner kick in for the score and her final goal was in the 67th minute.

Jessica Florence (Frankfort, Ky.) scored her first goal of the season in the 39th minute as she took the ball on the left side from Heather Jaques (Manitoba, Canada) and put it in the far corner. Right before the end of the half, Jaques scored to push the Union lead to 3-0 before the break.

After a Spalding foul in the 58th minute around a loose ball, senior Karin Moore (Owingsville, Ky.) took the penalty kick and notched her first goal of the season. Karla Goncalves (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was the last Lady Bulldog to score with a goal in the 70th minute with the assist from Amanda Weber (Ontario, Canada). Weber was also credited with the assist on Peixoto’s goal in the 67th minute.

Briann Bargo (Somerset, Ky.) preserved the shutout in Union’s goal. The Lady Bulldogs attempted 31 shots, with 15 on goal compared to Spalding’s three shots. Dominque Floyd stopped nine shots from the Lady Bulldogs.

Spalding only had 11 players on roster for Thursday’s contest and the duo of Beth Lawrey and Amanda Trombley were injured in the 16th minute, leaving the Golden Eagles with nine players on the pitch against Union’s 11. Theresa Rau also left the game in the 60th minute to further stretch the squad thin. Despite the short-handed status, Spalding fought hard against Union and battled until the final whistle.

Union will return to Appalachian Athletic Conference action next Wednesday when Milligan (Tenn.) College visits Burch-Nau Field for a 2 p.m. match.
