BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The senior duo of Brooke Smith and Carley Blankenship each posted season highs to lead Union College to a 95-86 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over visiting Reinhardt (Ga.) College Wednesday.

Smith (Pineville, Ky.) knocked down 34 points and posted her ninth double-double of the season as she also grabbed 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) poured in 24 points as she went 4-for-6 from 3-point land. She also dished out five assists, moving her within one of becoming the fourth player in program history to amass 400 helpers in a career.

The win improved Union to 13-7 overall and 5-3 in league play, while Reinhardt dropped to 9-10 overall and 3-4 in the AAC.

Union got off to a sluggish start, falling behind Reinhardt 14-6 with 14:13 to go in the opening period. The Lady Bulldogs rebounded with a 13-5 rally to take a 21-19 lead following a pair of Smith free throws at the 11:13 mark.

After some back-and-forth play, Union reeled off 12 straight points to open up a 38-26 advantage with 4:32 to play.

Reinhardt went 4:54 without a field goal but cut the margin to 43-36 after a Jemere McCurty bucket with 2:36 remaining.

The Lady Bulldogs, though, ended the half on a 6-3 run to take a 29-39 lead into the break.

Union could never quite shake Reinhardt in the second half as the Lady Eagles kept hanging around and cut the margin to 72-66 with 8:56 to play. However, the Lady Bulldogs used a 13-5 surge to build a 14-point cushion by the 3:59 mark en route to the 95-86 decision.

After Smith and Blankenship, Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) netted 12 points with Ashley Lunsford (Orlando, Ky.) chipping in 10 points and eight rebounds.

For Reinhardt, Jaybriel Gutyon led the way with 15 points with McCurty following with 14. Kinsey Galyon and Monique Blanding contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Both teams made a living at the foul line with Union going 27-for-37 and Reinhardt knocking down 26-of-36 as teams combined for 52 fouls.

Union will travel to UVa-Wise Saturday for another conference showdown. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
