MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. - Union College found itself in to deep a hole to dig out of as host Milligan (Tenn.) College posted a 78-71 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory Wednesday.

The loss ended the Lady Bulldogs' win streak at five games, dropping them to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Lady Buffaloes are now 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the AAC.

Brooke Smith (Pineville, Ky.) recorded her fifth double-double of the season, pacing Union with 25 points and 10 rebounds. She now has 2,253 career points and is 21 away from eclipsing Amber Spencer's program record of 2,273.

Smith also became the third player in program history to record 800 career rebounds as she now has 804. She trails only Spencer (1,178) and Michelle Lewallen (972) on the all-time rebounding list.

Early on, Union held an 11-6 advantage after a Capri Savage (Orofino, Idaho) buried a 3-pointer with 15:34 left in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs kept a five-point cushion when Ashley Lunsford (Orlando, Ky.) scored to make it 18-13 at the 11:02 mark.

However, Milligan closed out the first half on a 27-11 run in taking a 40-29 lead at the break.

The Lady Buffaloes continued to roll as the second half unfold, eventually opening up a 62-43 margin following a Heather Mandela bucket with 9:05 remaining.

Union tried to bounce back as Smith scored with 1:37 remaining to cap a 23-8 run, pulling the Lady Bulldogs within 70-66.

The rally fizzled at that point as Milligan netted seven of the final 12 points in recording the 78-71 victory.

After Smith, Carley Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) and Lunsford paced Union with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Mandela led Milligan with 26 points and nine rebounds, while Alisha Mainer knocked in 14 points. Jaimee Hill contributed 10 points as well.

Union returns to action Saturday when it plays host to Virginia Intermont College at 4 p.m.
