HAMMOND, La. - NCAA Division I Southeastern Louisiana University scored early and often en route to a 69-20 victory over visiting Union College Thursday.

The Lions (2-0 overall) scored the game's first 42 points as they took a 56-10 lead into the half.

The loss dropped Union to 1-1 on the year.

Trailing 42-0 early in the second quarter, Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) hit Demetrius Hicks (Marietta, Ga.) for an 87-yard touchdown strike. The play is the longest of the Bulldogs this season.

With 10:15 left in the half, Chad Boyington (Stockbridge, Ga.) booted a 22-yard field goal to make it a 42-10 contest. However, Southeastern Louisiana scored two more touchdowns before the half for a 56-10 lead at the break.

The Lions scored twice to start the second half, stretching the margin to 69-10.

A Corey Niebel (Gray, Ky.) 56-yard punt pinned Southeastern Louisiana on its 1-yard line. On the next play, Cain Smith (Lafayette, Ga.) recovered a Sam Fairley fumble in the end zone to pull Union within 69-17 at the 25-second mark in the third quarter.

Boyington added a 27-yard field goal in the fourth, making the final 69-20.

Southeastern Louisiana outgained Union 565-247. Both teams fumbled the ball away three times, but the Lions intercepted two Bulldog passes. The Union passing attack was held in check as Union completed 6-of-26 for 128 yards.

Antonio Drane (Louisville, Ky.) led Union in rushing with 83 yards on 16 carries.

Brian Babin completed 16-of-19 passes for 286 yards and five touchdowns for Southeastern Louisiana, while Zeke Jones ran for 103 and two scores on 13 carries.

The Bulldogs, ranked 10th in the NAIA, returns home to play host to Faulkner (Ala.) University on Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m.

  • Cain Smith's touchdown was the first defensive score for the Bulldogs this season.
  • The 20 points are the most Union has scored against a NCAA Division I opponent. The previous high was 13 against Jacksonville State in 1999.
  • The 87-yard pass completion was the longest for Brinkley in his career. The previous long pass was 65 yards.
