BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Heather Jaques broke through for three goals Friday as she helped lift host Union College to a 4-0 victory over Mountain State (W.Va.) University.

With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improved to 3-2 overall, while the Lady Cougars dropped to 0-4.

Union applied heavy offensive pressure nearly the entire contest as it fired 41 total shots with 22 going on goal. The Lady Bulldogs would have had a number of other goals were it not for the play of Mountain State goalkeeper Christina Baker, who recorded 18 saves including on off a penalty kick 19 minutes into the game.

Jaques (Manitoba, Canada) ended the scoreless tie in the 25th minute as she weaved her way through the Lady Cougar defense and beat Baker to her right side. Five minutes later, Amanda Weber (Ontario, Canada) set up Jaques for the game's second goal as Union took a 2-0 advantage into the half.

"I am happy with the win," said Union coach Juliana Filipe, "but we missed too many opportunities."

In the 57th minute, Ashley Hall (Hazard, Ky.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a breakaway.

Jaques completed the scoring in the 82nd minute off an Hannah Goins (Corbin, Ky.) assist.

The Union kept Mountain State in check, allowing the opponents just four shots with only three being on net. Sophomore Brittany Puryear (Somerset, Ky.) played the first half and made two saves, while junior Briann Bargo (Somerset, Ky.) played the final 45 minutes and recorded one save.

Union returns to action on Thursday when it visits Bluefield (Va.) College for an Appalachian Athletic Conference match at 4 p.m.
